Veterans Affairs Educational Resources (English and Français)

This site is an incredible resource for teachers of all grades.  With activities that are suitable for kindergarten students all the way to grade twelve graduates, this site is guaranteed to help teachers with fostering remembrance as well as with their general curriculum.  Some favourite activities include Jason and the Memory Box (an online story that also teaches basic addition), Postcards for Peace, and the colourful and informative Tales of Animals in War.  There are also lesson plans and teacher’s guides.  There are far too many resources to list them all here, so you’ll have to go check out their site!

Poster and Literary Contest for Youth (English and Français)

Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion holds a Poster and Literary Contest for students across Canada beginning at Branch Level and all the way up to National Level.  This is an excellent project for teachers to give their students for an art or writing project while teaching children about Remembrance.  There are four different age categories – primary (gr. 1, 2, 3) [poster contest only], junior (gr. 4, 5, 6), intermediate (gr. 7, 8, 9), and senior (gr. 10, 11, 12) – and several different poster/essay categories – black and white or colour poster, essay and poetry.  Prizes range from certificates all the way up to a chance to go to Ottawa to attend the National Remembrance Day ceremony!

Youth Track and Field

The Royal Canadian Legion has offered training and competition for track and field for over fifty years!  Each Provincial branch provides Summer camps for its youth, from which a number of the participants are selected to travel to the National Competition.  These camps not only train athletes, but also help build skills such as teamwork.  To find out more about the Provincial camp, please contact Saskatchewan Command or check out this link for the 2013 Provincial Track and Field camp.
