Big River Community High School Students Raise Money For Troops
Students at Big River Community High School raised money for the Troop Morale Fund.  Students traded any spare change they had in their pockets for a red ribbon to represent general support or a yellow ribbon to represent support of someone they actually know in the forces.   This is the third annual event and this year the students raised more than $650!  Our students feel this is a small way of showing our troops appreciation!  Local people at the town restaurants and businesses also dug into their pockets when our SRC president went downtown at coffee time.

Holding the cheque is:   Left to Right:  Vice President Lawrence Vandal and President Phil Devonshire. Big River Branch No. 136

Nipawin Tribute to Veterans’ Mural

The morning of Saturday Oct. 19th, 2009 dawned sunny and warm as Legionnaires from across the province gathered for the opening parade of the 45th Biennial Convention of the Saskatchewan Legion. Prior to the parade a gathering of local Veterans posed in front of the Mural for a photo arranged by Oren Robison.

Nipawin Branch President Verda Hoppe and Mural Artist Zhong- Ru Huang, in front of the Legion Mural

A Mural to pay tribute to all veterans was proposed to a membership meeting in 2004 by President Verda Hoppe after the Nipawin Mural society had contacted her because they felt the Legion hall would be a great location for a mural.

The Nipawin Mural society gave the project a generous grant; personal donations came in from across the Country alongside all the amazing local support. The Legions’ non-stop fundraising, donations from local musicians and a significant donation from the Scotia bank raised enough money to fund the project.

Zong Ru- Huang, a Regina artist who had done murals on the Nipawin Rink and Seniors Centre was chosen in 2008 to paint the Tribute to Veterans’ Mural. He spent countless hours in the Nipawin Legion researching military history. The Branch had compiled a list of things they wanted to see on the Mural, the list had special input from the Local Veterans.
